Lord GeorgeBrown had a party — to coin a phrase — at the Tipcon official business lunch recently. His Lordship was never stuck for a word in the House of Commons and the mind boggles at what we might hear over the airwaves, now that proceedings at Westminster are broadcast, if he were still there.
Poor Jack Ashwell looked discomfited when Lord GeorgeBrown told him TGWU was wrong to oppose the tachograph. He looked on the verge of throwing a fit when GeorgeBrown reminded him that TGWU had once fought for tachographs. And who should know better than LGB, who was a member of the union committee,who made the demand.
Nor can he have pleased his Upper House colleagues. His reference to the untimely demise of Jimmy Hoffa of the American Teamsters Union "in a concrete overcoatin the waters of New York harbour and comparing that with his departure to the Lords will raise a few aristocratic eyebrows, I'm sure.
