BP OIL took delivery of a road tanker with a glass fibre body which will be used for the delivery of petrol to garages.
The grp tank, mounted on a rigid chassis, will carry a total load of 19,000 litres (4,200gal) of petrol divided between six separate compartments.
Construction of tankers for the carriage of petrol is governed by strict regulations. This is the first time grp has been used by BP for this purpose although it is used by its associates in Europe.
The material is slightly heavier than aluminium but lighter than steel, and is said to provide better insulation properties in the event of fire.
For the first three months, says the Health and Safety Executive, the evaluation must be made with gas oil. Only then, if performance is satisfactory, will it allow petrol to be carried.
