THIS WINTER's hire or reward wage round has reached its likely conclusion with two areas having agreed E3 increases in top-weight basic pay.

In North and Mid-Wales, the new rate from February 1 — the anniversary date — is £88, with subsistence up by 50p to £10.50, and dark money up by 2p to 52p per hour.

In Tyneside and Carlisle, the Transport and General Workers Union is recommending acceptance of a revised offer of £3 on all grades, taking top weight pay to £88, 25p on subsistence on all vehicles to £10, with the deal being backdated to February 1.

The Northern offer followed rejection of an earlier offer of £2.75 on basic pay, and was made at a meeting last week between TGWU and Road Haulage Association officers. Results of the ballot are expected today (Saturday).

The TGWU and United Road Transport Union are • pursuing company level agreements with employers in South Wales and North West England.

The Freight .Transport Association says drivers' gross earnings last year rose by around six per cent, with basic pay rising by between seven and eight per cent. Government statistics show there was a 7.9 per cent rise in national average earnings.

Subsistence payments rose by an average of 10 per cent last year to a nightly figure of £10.98. Ninety-five per cent of firms participating in the ETA survey provided protective clothing, 77 per cent pension facilities, and 69 per cent meals.
