Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OUR prizewinner this week is Mr. T. A. Davies, of Corby, Northants. He says that often he has difficulty when dismantling the A E C five-speed gearbox in withdrawing the reverse gear shaft. Mr. Davies thinks it likely that there is a special tool on the market to carry out this operation, but points out that the simple drawer he has made has proved absolutely efficient in useā€”and a great time saver. 141115F NLIT WELDED

The tool consists of a 0.5-in, diameter rod 4-5 in. long, threaded along 3.5-in. by U NF die and along the remaining inch by fin. B SF die. A 4-in. B SF nut was then screwed down its corresponding thread and brazed in position. This stud was entered into the f-in. B S F thread in the centre of the reverse shaft. Mr. Davies then obtained a length of pipe 2.5 m. long with 2.5-in. bore. On one end of this pipe he welded a piece of 0.5-in, mild steel plate with a 0.5-in. hole

in the centre. This section was -then

placed over the stud with some of its U N F thread protruding through the plate. The two fin. UN F were then welded together to spread the pulling load over twice as many threads and this nut run down the thread of the stud and against the plate. Now the shaft could be withdrawn by continuing to turn the nut down the thread.
