Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Electronic braking systems have now been adopted by the European truck manufacturers and EBS is increasingly specified on trailers. Knorr-Bremse reckons 40% of UK trailers are now sold with EBS. Wabco has already fitted 200,000 trailer EBS systems in Europe, counting Krone, Kogel, Montracon and Schmitz among its customers.

Cartwright fits Haldex EB+ as standard. One reason vehicle and trailer manufacturers like EBS is that there are fewer components to install—Knorr-Bremse says its TEBS4 cuts the number of parts by 40%.

When the tractor and trailer are both equipped with EBS, the response time—and therefore the vehicle stopping distance—are both reduced: Wabco quotes a stopping distance of 16m from 85km/h.

Trailers fitted with EBS all have an electronic control module which combines the ECU, the sensors and the pneumatic control in a single box.

"EBS is not the big step change that some operators think it is," says Simon Craddock, sales and marketing manager for KnorrBremse. "Conventional features such as ABS and ASR come as standard and manufacturers can now offer enhanced vehicle stability control with Electronic Stability Program."

Wabco's latest D series EBS is a new design with improved logic that reduces air consumption by 30%, a new safety circuit and ASR. Trailer emergency valves can now be fitted, and external pressure sensors are located within the modulator.

It can also control lift-axle operation, including the forcible lifting of the axle to improve traction provided the remaining axles remain within design limits and vehicle speed is below 30km/h (18.6mph).

Monitoring pad or lining wear can be incorporated. When the pad or lining reaches predefined limits, the ABS/EBS lamp on the dashboard lights up. The system modulator records the wear history of the friction material, logging the hours taken to make the last five pad replacements, and the mileages at which they occurred.

Haldex's EB+ system includes an interface to a GPS or GSM tracking module, allowing the trailer to be tracked, The Info Centre on EB+ can display the loaded state of the trailer, distance travelled, brake demand, tyre pressure, and even load temperature.

The Info Centre acts as the interface with the electronic control unit and stores all the braking parameters, so, should the ECU need replacing, the data can simply be downloaded from the Info Centre.
