Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Colin Barnett Don-Bur, Volvo and American Airlines have joined forces to create a working concept urban artic for use in the highsecurity environment of Heathrow airport.

The latest addition to DonBur's trailer range was born out of a combination of high rents at Heathrow and the increased security awareness since 11September 2001.

Since American Airlines moved its cargo depot off the airport to less expensive premises at nearby Hounslow, freight pallets have been carried on public roads on rigid flatbeds covered by nets. With security now higher on the agenda, the airline had to look for an alternative.

The result is the Cargornaster, the first of what the Stoke-on-Trent trailer builder hopes will be many to work in aviation. The 28ft single-axle box is pulled by a Volvo FL220, with the combination plated at 23,000kg The trailer's specification includes GRP panels, a translucent roof and a powered roller floor from Rolamat. The key to the trailer's ability to handle 96" aviation pallets is the custom Henderson roller-shutter, which is housed in a special frame with virtually no intrusion into the rear aperture.

The powered floor is oper

ated by a wanderlead plugged into the left side of the body, while six smail windows at trailer floor level allow monitoring of the pallet's progress.

The rear ot the trailer is protected by a Croft Backstop underrun bar, which applies the brakes if it contacts a solid object, and a bolted-on steei frame with shock absorbing rollers at floor level. As the trailer can be unloaded by fork-lift, the roof is higher

than it needs to be, to provide a greater margin of operator proofing'. The Cargomaster has its own air tanks and battery pack to allow independent operation. Although an EBS braking system is specified, it acts on drums on the air-suspended ROR FL1100 axle, as Don-Bur thinks that short journeys won't give discs enough work to do. Volvo's contribution to the project is the FL220 4x2 tractor, standard except for an Allison World Series M03060 automatic gearbox. a Dinex particulate filter and a secondary power supply to the trailer. Possible future refinements to the current spec include a vertical exhaust stack and increased air tankage.
