• An ex-Asda transport team leader has won her case at an industrial tribunal against the company for its failure to consult employees early enough on closing one of As depots.
Betty Mathews, 50, won compensation for 67 colleagues last week ranging from £430 to £2,500.
Cr 2 January, Asda told employees at its Croydon depot, which carried out the supermarket's home delivery operations, that it was to close, With home delivery to be moved to another store.
The Tribunal found that although the company did not unfairly dismiss the staff, Asda should have started consulting employees when the decision was frst made, which was before Christmas.
Responding in a company statement, Asda says: "We felt that it was better for colleagues and customers to begin the process after the Christmas period. This meant colleagues were facing a job change in the Spring rather than just after the costly Christmas holidays."
Mathews was responsible for almost 200 employees at the Croydon depot, of which 35 were drivers. She and her team operated a handful of 7.5-tonne trucks and 40 3.5-tonne vans.
The case continues this week in a hearing for compensation and costs.
