N A recently completed analysis for the US Federal Highway Administration of 30,000 accidents concluded that 68% of all commercial vehicle accidents in 1983 were preventable, 94.5% of preventable accidents were caused by driver failures and only 5.1% by vehicle failures, A commercial motor vehicle is defined as weighing over 10,000 lbs hauling goods in interstate commerce for regulated, private and exempt carriers.
The researchers concluded that 20% of preventable accidents resulted from driver failure to allow for adverse environmental conditions, 12% resulted from following too closely, and failure to maintain control caused 7%.
