• A scheme designed to make it easier for truck drivers and warehousemen to become managers or be rewarded for good work has been set up by NFC Contract Distribution.

The company says the career counselling and evaluation programme — the UK's first blue-collar workers — is in response to the skills gap predicted for the 1990s.

The scheme, which has union support, has been launched in the company's Northampton and Peterborough depots. It will also be introduced at its brewery operation for hide Coope in Redhill this month, and at two Tesco distribution centres next year.

Many of our nonmanagement staff, while perhaps lacking formal qualifications, have both the ability and dedication to become senior depot managers," says NFC Contract Distribution human resources director Geoff Mee.
