We read with interest George Wilmot's article on "Grading road transport managers" (CM December 29) and would like to enlighten him on one or two facts with regard to his article, as he seems quite ignorant as to what is going on within the industry. We would like to draw his attention to the following paragraph taken from his article:. "I am confident too, that if a strong, professional body of road transport managers were established, there would be less political interference, and the industry certainly needs this respite."

It would appear that George Wilmot is either not very well informed on what is going on within the practical side of the industry, or that he has a very short memory: perhaps it's the latter. As regards this paragraph, and to refresh the minds of the academics such as George Wilmot, we would like to remind them that a strong, professional body of practical road transport managers has been in existence for the past four years or so, namely, the National Guild of Transport Managers, whose strength is growing daily.

Regarding the last paragraph of the same article. This above-named body would not subscribe to a voluntary scheme of transport manager registration, but would wholeheartedly support a statutory scheme. We therefore stand by our original proposals which were submitted to the Minister on December 18 1970 for a statutory scheme. This, of course, does not preclude us from co-operation with other interested bodies.

BILL JORDAN, Assistant National Secretary, National Guild of Transport Managers, South Shields, County Durham.
