Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UBLISHED by Transport Journal Publications, Ltd., Buckingham Court, 78 Buckingham Gate, London, S.W.I, "The Blue Book" is a new reference work listing major operators of public service vehicles in the British Isles. Copies are available from the above address at 10s. 6d. each including postage.

By its title and contents it inevitably invites comparison with the well-known Passenger Transport Red Book, although it is not, in fact, as similar as might be expected. The Blue Book has evidently been compiled with the production of a compact and easily readable volume as a primary aim. The page size is 61 in. x 4 in. and the book is in. thick over the stiff board covers, so that it can be described as pocket-sized. The use of unduly small type is avoided and the layout, with a fresh line devoted to each subject under each operator's name, makes quick reference Very easy.

To achieve this, not only has space devoted to other information been kept to a minimum but the list of operators included has had to be restricted. Generally speaking, small independent operators are not included; and although this is in itself a legitimate means of devoting the available space to giving more information about the larger concerns, the criterion for inclusion seems a little obscure. Admittedly, compilers of this type of reference book are, to some degree, at the mercy of the concerns listed and a note stating that some have been excluded because of lack of infor mation appears on the first page however, somewhat unsatisfactory no entry for an operator of 24 and another with 20 when others nine vehicles are included, to tt results of a spot check on the oi in One county.

On the other hand the listing c pendent operators in alphabetica in each country rather than g; them by counties has its advantagt the precise address is not particularly as a county index vided. And this newly compiled very up to date.

For quick reference it has consi merits. If a more obvious way ol lug which of the smaller firms sb. included were evolved it would I more useful. A
