PORTUGAL is to impose a new import quota on motor vehicles from January 1 next year, admitting only 75 complete vehicles a year from each manufacturer. All others will have to include at least 15% in value of Portuguese labour or materials.
Among commercial vehicles only those for specialized purposes such as' firefighting will be admitted complete; others must be sent in as chassis, or in some C.K.D. form.
Already the Portuguese U.T.I.C. works have been building their own bodies on Imported British chassis, and Leyland have plans in hand to assemble vehicles in Portugal. at Setubal.
