Special Vehicle for Weight Testing.

Manchester Watch Committee proposes to put into service a new type of motor vehicle to facilitate the work of the Weights and Measures Department. It will be a travelling testing office and will visit all the outlying areas, whereas at present traders have to travel many miles to get weights and measures adjusted.

Without such a vehicle, states a report by the watch committee, a large increase of staff will be necessary to deal with the work.

Oilers to Save £5,180 a Year.

Wig-an Corporation has decided to buy 14 oil engines to replace petrol engines. Councillor Ball told the January meeting of the town council that the increased cost of petrol was forcing the committee's hands more rapidly than was expected. The change-over would cost £7,000, and the saving in operating costs would amount to 45,180 per annum. There is sufficient money in the renewals fund to purchase the new engines.

Effort to Cut Loss on Bootle Services.

An effort is being made by Liverpool Corporation to arrange a conference between that authority, Bootle Corporation, Litherland 'Crban District Council and Ribble Motor Services, Ltd. The object is to arrive at some means for rearranging the Bootle services, so that the present loss on their operation. may be reduced.

Bootle town clerk has inquired for particulars of the re-arrangement proposals.

Investigation of Alleged Excessive Fares.

The South Wales Traffic Commissioners have informed Cardiff Corporation that they have received a number of complaints regarding the alleged excessiveness of fares on the Cardiff-Newport route of the municipality. The Commissioners consider it necessary fully to •investigate the fares before the licence is renewed, and if there be no grounds for the complaints the licence will be granted automatically without variation.
