Truck raffle as recession hits

AN IRISH OWNER-DRIVER is raffling off his truck because work is so scarce that he cannot keep up the monthly repayments.

Tom Sibbald paid €110,000 (£95,815) for his MAN TGX 440 XLX last summer, when business was booming. But since then, says Sibbald, his work of transporting paving stones, bricks and blocks has "dried up".

Sibbald, who operates from Hacketstown, Co Carlow, decided that he could no longer comfortably afford the €2,500 (22,175) monthly repayments on the truck and decided to raffle it.

He says: "It started as a joke, but my wife said to me 'why not?' so I thought I'd give it a go."

Sibbald has so far sold 400 raffle tickets at €200 (£174) each. He is aiming to sell 600, which would raise more than the value of the truck, because he wants to give €10,000 (£8,700) to a day care centre in Hacketstown.

The raffle, which will be supervised by a solicitor, will take place in Sibbald's local pub, the Corner House, on March 28. He is unable to advertise the raffle because of legal restrictions, but is selling tickets through the Truckers Club in Carlow.

Sibbald has been a truck driver for 33 years and says that after he has raffled the truck and covered his costs he will be looking for a "permanent, pensionable job".
