Mayor scraps next phase of LEZ to industry's relief
THE ROAD TRANSPORT industry has welcomed London mayor Boris Johnson's decision to scrap phase three of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ), which would have affected vans.
Light goods vehicles and vans up to 3.5 tonnes were set to be included in the scheme from October 2010.
However, Johnson believes this would have a detrimental impact on small businesses, with potential bills of up to £2,000 to fit pollutionabatement equipment.
Gordon Telling, the Freight Transport Association's head of policy for London, says: "City Hall has listened to industry and the FTA and reviewed this unpopular and ill-conceived scheme, which amounted to little more than window dressing."
Jack Semple, policy director at the Road Haulage Association, adds: "The RHA has opposed the LEZ from the start and we are pleased about this announcement."
