• Kent police say 105 truck thefts were recorded in the county last year, down 33% on 1996 figures and the fifth successive year that a reduction has been achieved.

DC Kelvin Wootton of Kent's criminal intelligence bureau says police aim to continue the downward trend but adds that hauliers can help fight truck crime. He says professional lorry thieves deliberately target smaller operators who cannot afford physical security at lorry compounds. One answer, says Wootton, is for hauliers to share compounds and spend the money saved on fitting security systems.
