AN official annouacement by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., that they propose to open up a large production centre on Merseyside contains good news for the British Transport Commission.
First, part of the land they propose to buy at Halewood, to the south-east of Liverpool, belongs to the Commission and, secondly, Sir Patrick Hennessy, Ford chairman, says in a statement, "We look forward to a mutually profitable association in the future concerning the handling of heavy additional goods traffic which is inherent in our decision to move to Merseyside."
On the Halewood site, Ford intend to build a £25m. integrated car plant capable of producing 200,000 vehicles a year.
RAILWAY TRAFFIC UP
GOODS and passenger traffic_ carried by British Railways continues to increase, During the four weeks ended January 16, the amount of steel carried from the principal steelworks totalled 733,000 tons, a rise of about 39 per cent. compared with the same period last year.
Goods traffic carried during the four weeks ended January 24 showed an increase of 11.2 per cent. • Although comparable passenger receipts during the first four weeks of 1960 showed an advance of 1840,000, the railways claim that only part of this improvement resulted from fares increases.
