J.JAULIERS engaged on delivering
materials for the new £6,500,000 Stretford-Eccles by-pass are being interviewed by Lancashire County Police in connection with allegations of large-scale delivery frauds.
Inquiries into suspected irregularities were started by county officials after the receipt of certain conveyance notes and weighbridge slips. Investigations suggested that many of the loads existed only on paper, some of the documents appearing to be crude copies of public weighbridge slips.
Suspicion was aroused when a flood of conveyance slips arrived at the council offices for payment, and officials now fear that payment has been made for many loads of undelivered filling materials. Handwriting experts are examining signatures of the documents in possession of the police, and further inquiries are being made among weighbridge men in the Manchester area as well as among subcontractors and employees.
