Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A "roads champion" is to be employed by local councils and enterprise companies in Argyll and Lochaber as part of their campaign to Improve the A82.

George Harper. director of development and environmental services for Argyll and Bute Council, says some stretches of the road, which runs from Glasgow via Loch Lomond to Inverness, are so bad that hauliers are avoiding it.

Harper says the road is very slow, and very narrow, with traffic lights where subsistence has been a problem.

''We feel very strongly about the upgrading." he adds. "The

road is horrendous and that's having a knock-on effect on the economy—and that includes the ferry ports to the Western Isles. Improvements to the A9 several years ago boosted Inverness's economy, and we'd hope to see the same thing happen here."

Phil Flanders, Scottish regional director for the Road Haulage Association, agrees that the state of the road causes frustration; he will watch the move "with interest".

Argyll and Highlands enterprise companies and local authorities will fund the new position, which is to be advertised shortly.
