THE PERCENTAGE of heavy goods vehicles which failed to pa their test took a sudden drop last year — and the number test. increased.

According to Transport Secretary, David Howell, 19 per cent motor vehicles and trailers failed — while in all the previous yea going back to 1975-76 the percentage had been between 21 and 21 Out of 771,963 vehicles tested the passes last year totalled 625,3 and the failures 146,601. The highest number tested in the previo five years had been 735,282 in 1975-76 and the previous highE number of passes 574,954 the same year.

Dealing with failures, Mr Howell's news was also good — t lowest number before 1980-81 was 150,656 in 1977-78.
