Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Capstan Major tyretread-depth gauge which was designed originally for a Government department is now being marketed generally.

Features of the gauge are a 2in. dial calibrated in 0.5mm divisions up to 20mrn. The gauge is strongly made using a ,gun-metal casting and it is finished in chromium plate.

To use the Capstan Major gauge, the release button on the side of the casing is depressed and the probe inserted into the tyre tread until the face comes up against the outside of the tread. The button is then released to lock the probe and the depth can be read off the dial.
