Six weeks ahead of the formal launch, Mercedes has revealed some details of the new Axor and Atego ranges. Julian Milnes reports.

WITH THE 2004 Truck of the Year award in the bag thanks to the revamped Actros, Mercedes has turned its attention to the smaller Axor and Atego models. The newcomers will be officially unveiled with appropriate ceremony at next month's IAA show in Hanover.

The makeovers cover both the aesthetic and the mechanical areas of the trucks, and there's a degree of repositioning in the market to satisfy changing demands. Improvements include uprated chassis, improved standard features and longer service intervals. There are also cosmetic changes to the exteriors aimed at giving a more uniform design across the range.

A revised interior for both trucks includes new seats, linings, heating and ventilation with new bunks in the long-distance cab.

Three cabs will be available: distribution, long-distance and comfort. Aimed at distribution, light construction and municipal operations, the Atego range includes two-axle rigids and tractors from 6.5 to 15 tonnes GVW.

Four and six-cylinder diesels have outputs ranging from 122hp to 279hp. The Atego will be available with a six or nine-speed manual box as well as, for the first time, a Telligent preselector gearchange.

The German road toll is set to cover trucks from 12 tonnes so a new 1222 low-frame distribution model will join the range weighing in at 11.9 tonnes GVW Previously only available as a tractor, the new Axor also comes as a rigid.

Designed for medium long-distance, heavy distribution and construction site work, it's intended to bridge the gap between the Atego and the Actros.

Seven power ratings

New models include a 4x2 and a 4x4 with a GVW of 18 tonnes; a 6x2 at 25 tonnes and a 6x4 at 26 tonnes. Seven power ratings range from 230hp to 428hp.

From mid-2005 the Axor longdistance trucks will become available with the option of BlueTec 4 and 5 engine technology, meeting the requirements of Euro-4 and 5 respectively. The first Atego BlueTec will be a Euro-4 version in autumn 2005.
