THE restriction on the manufacturing powers of the publicly owned transport industries is to be removed. Mrs. Barbara Castle announced in the Commons this week that she would make the necessary provisions as part of the comprehensive transport legislation she hopes to introduce next session.

On another subject, Mrs. Castle this week re-emphasized her determination that liner train terminals should be fully used on an open basis. But once again she could not give a date when this was likely to happen.

Other points made by the Minister and her two juniors during a long session of Commons questions included: she was asking the European Council of Ministers of Transport how they could improve the safety of internationa road passenger transport; she was proposing tc set up regional transport co-ordinating corn. mittees in the Autumn; a special study of vans ir accidents is to be made; and Mrs. Castle wil not introduce legislation compelling but operators to provide a service in rural areas ir response to public demand.
