THE Southport congress of the 1 Institute of Transport, 'originally intended to be held last June but cancelled because of the rail strike, has been fixed for June 5-8 next year. The headquarters will be the Prince of Wales Hotel, and the programme will be. on lines similar to those planned before.

The Continental visit, about which the .council of the Institute had been making preliminary inquiries with 1956 in mind, has been postponed until 1957.

• LIGHTWEIGHT RAMP FOR UNLOADING DY using a new portable aluminiumLi alloy ramp built by Frederick Braby and Co., Ltd:, Bristol, the unloading height of a tipping lorry can be increased by 4 ft. The device consists of three parts—two runways and a trestle on which their rear ends rest— which can easily be handled by two men. The ramp, up which the vehicle is backed, will withstand the weight of a 12-tonner.

The device has been designed for Cornwall Mills, Par, Cornwall, where quartz from Scandinavia is piled during the months when the ports of origin are free from ice.
