AUTOMATIC VALVE FOR C A R liC BETTER. — Etablissements de Dion Bouton (Societe Anonyine).—No. 28,559, dated under Convention, 14th August, 1908.--This invention relates to a dash. pot control for the auxiliary air inlet

valve. The auxiliary air inlet is arranged at the top of the casing, and the valve which controls this opening is supported by a stem which extends down Into a mercury pot and terminates in a cone-shaped float. Secured to the underside of the cone-shaped float is a disc. The mercury normally forces the float upwards and closes the valve, but, when the speed of the engine increases, the suction caused thereby will force the valve downwards, thus causing the float to be further immersed in the mercury. The disc at the bottom of the float retards the movement of the float, and thus acts as a dash-pot.

STEAM GENERATORS—Mills and Another.—No. 22,375, dated 21st October, 1908.—This invention relates to steam generators of the water-tube type. and has for its object the prevention of priming. The generator comprises two annular chambers, arranged one above the other, and connected by means of circular groups of vertically-disposed water tubes. The upper and lower chambers are also connected by means of a larger water tube, arranged externally to the boiler casing ; this water tube carries the water-gauge glass and the pressure gauge. The lower chamber is filled with water, which extends partly up the water tubes. Concentrically arranged within the groups of water tubes is a spiral tube, which is connected at one end to the upper or steam chamber and at the other cud communicates with the engine ; this tube is for superheating the steam. The furnace is arranged beneath the superheating tube, an a baffle-plate is arranged between it and the furnace. In order to prevent priming, the water tubes nearest to the formice are extended into the steam chamber a greater distance than those farther from the furnace; also, the nearest tubes to the furnace do not extend so far into the water chamber as those farther from the furnace.

ELECTRIC 'MAGNETIC TRANSMIS SION GEAR.—Midgley and Another.— No. 12,738, dated 13th June. 1908.—According to this invention, a casing carries a motor armature, and within bearings carried by the casing a framework for the field magnets is mounted. This framework is carried by a hollow shaft, one end of which is coupled to the driven mechanism; the other end carries, so as to be slidable thereon, the internal part of a cone clutch, and this is adapted to engage the external part of the clutch, which external part is mounted on the shaft of the prime mover. Through the hollow shaft runs a shaft which carries the dynamo armature, and this latter shaft is directly connected to the shaft of the prime mover. A set of brushes is provided for the commutators of both motor and dynamo armatures, and these two armatures are electrically connected together through the field magnets. Levers are provided for the adjustment of the angle of the brushes, by which means the speed is regulated, and the direction of rotation reversed. One of the levers which is employed for the adjustment of the brushes may also be caused to move the clutch into engage. ment, thus giving a positive drive between the generator armature and the field magnets.

LIQUID-FUEL BURNER,—The S.M. Car Syndicate, Ltd.—No. 4,132, dated 19th February, 1909.—This invention relates to liquid-fuel burners of the type employed with steam generators, and has for its object to facilitate the renewal of the topples or jets of the burlier. The jets are constituted by a number of trough-like members having transversely arranged saw-cuts and flanges. These troughs project through the cover of the mixing chamber, and are attached thereto by riveting the flanges. By this construction, the life of the burner is considerably prolonged, and the top-plate of the mixing chamber is maintained relatively cool.

TIRES.—Bussing.—No. 28,527, dated 31st December, 1908.—This invention relates to tires of the type in which a number of blocks of resilient material are held on the feline of the wheel by suitable frames. According to the present invention the frames are constituted by a number of I-shaped pieces which are undercut and placed side by

side transversely on the felloe of the wheel. These frames are held in position on the felloe by means of clamp rings, and these are secured to the felloe by means of bolts which extend lateraily therethrough.
