• Major changes to two of Cummins's most popular engines are designed to make them easier to service, quieter and more powerful.

All versions of the 10-litre range, from the LT10-250 to the LTAA-325, including horizontal PSV variants, gain from an increased sump capacity (up from 26.5 to 34 litres) allowing oil-change intervals to be extended by 25% to 20,000km.

By fitting a stiffer pressedsteel gear cover at the front of the block, noise emissions have been reduced by as much as 1.5dB(A).

Less obvious changes include an external drive on the fuel pump side of the engine, which can be used to operate auxiliary equipment without resorting to a cumbersome and vulnerable crankshaft-nose power take-off.

With air-to-air charge-cooling Cummins has increased the power from its six-litre BSeries engine range. Output is up from 134kW to 157kW (180hp to 210hp) to overlap the lower power range of the 8.3-litre C-Series engine.

A Bosch MW in-line fuelinjection pump replaces the Bosch and CAV distributor pumps used on lower-rated engines. Drive gears have been modified to suit the in-line pump, and revised injectors match the increased fuel-pump delivery rate. Holset's latest higher output turbocharger is also specified. With maximum torque increased from 671Nm (5011bft) at 1,500rpm to 706Nm (527Ib1t) at 1,600rpm, torque level is maintained at over 580Nm (4331bft) from 1,000rpm through to the engine's governed speed of 2,50Orpm.
