• has just taken delivery of the A.E.C. Mercury 8-cu.-ft. tipper seen in the accompanying picture; it is one of four ordered, built specially with a wheelbase of 9 ft. 6 in.

This short wheelbase compares with that of lift. 6 in. on Mercurys already operated by the concern and was specified in order to reduce the chance of overloading on sites. As the body is only 10 ft. 6 in. long against 13 ft. on the earlier vehicles—the rear overhang also has been lessened—the heaped load above the body sides is considerably reduced. A small heap is still inevitable hut instead of loads of 9-5 cu. yd. which have been known to be loaded on the I l-ft. 6-in.-wheelbase tippers, little more than the calibrated capacity is expected In be loaded.

As the charges for Crate's type of work are based on the calibrated capacity of the vehicles used, the shorter vehicles will not be carrying much material for which there is no payment, and there will obviously be reductions in wear and tear with the virtual elimination of overloading.

The body is by Always Welding Ltd. and Weston twin-ram under-body tipping gear is employed. Corten 10 and 12 s.w.g. steel was used for the construction, and the cab shield is of light alloy. Interior body width is 7 ft. 6 in. and height to the top of the sides is 2 ft. 10.25 in.
