• Kent Fire Brigade has joined Eurotunnel and the Government in dismissing the potential dangers of allowing ammonium nitrate through the Channel Tunnel.
Kent's chief fire officer Jeremy Beech says he has nothing to add to the Department of Transport's findings—simple fertilisers based on ammonium nitrate do not pose a problem.
But explosives expert Sidney Alford, who has warned of the dangers for years, says: "Quoting regulations and EC directives will do nothing to control the explosive nature of ammonium nitrate."
