• Although AEC will not be introducing any new models at Earls Court, Mercury and Mandator tractive units to be exhibited will incorporate some detail improvements.

Common changes to both chassis include improved cooling for the engines. Home-market chassis are now brought into line with export specifications with twin wax thermostats, a 3.25 gallon header tank mounted behind the cab and vents from both ends of the cylinder head. The rear engine mounting in the case of both the AV505, 151 bhp unit in the Mercury and the AV760, 220 bhp diesel in the Mandator has been changed and instead of the support being through the engine bell housing, it is now taken through the clutch housing. In both cases also, all 0.625in.-diameter air pipes are of stainless steel, air reservoirs are stove enamelled to eliminate corrosion and improved pipe connections are employed. The two designs now have their silencers located transversely and rubber-mounted

beneath the gearbox so avoiding the need for a flexible pipe in the system.

Changes peculiar to the Mercury tractive unit are that a 10in, frame, as on the Mandator, is used instead of one 9.25in. deep, fifth-wheel flitches are extended down behind the spring hanger brackets and a hub-reduction rear axle is made standard instead of the older unit with double-reduction in the centre. The axle change also applies to the Mercury shortwheelbase tipper and the hub-reduction axle is now the option to single reduction on the two Idnger-wheelbase models. The Mercury now has a 75ga1 fuel tank as standard and, when power steering is fitted, it is modified to give a better driver reaction.

In the case of the Mandator the original air-assisted hydraulic system for clutch operation is changed for the latest Clayton Dewandre. HM design to give quicker response and a better "feel".
