Wide Variety Of New Vehicles For Every Type Of Municipal Requirement

WITH the progress being made on new motorway systems and other major construction projects, stimulus has been given to the production of earth-moving equipment. This is shown by the vast array of such equipment to be exhibited at the Public Works and Municipal Services Congress and Exhibition which opens at Olympia next Monday and closes on November 19. Nearly 350 exhibitors have stands this year, and the exhibition will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.

Known as the Dumptruk, it is powered by the manufacturers' AVT1100 oil engine, which develops 340 h.p. at 1,900 r.p.m. The drive is transmitted through a 3-stage torque converter.

The body has a heaped capacity of 234 cu. yd., and this is achieved mainly by the 45 deg. outward flare of the integral spillboards. The Dumptruk has a high discharge rate, and it is claimed that up to 25 tons can be unloaded in nine seconds.

Being introduced on Stand 121 by Leyland Motors, Ltd., Leyland, Lancs, is the Scammell Sherpa Mk. II dump truck, which is similar to the Mk. I version, but is designed for a larger capacity of 9-11 cu. yd. and is intended solely for duties on site. The 4 x 2 chassis and allsteel half-cab is again employed for the Mk. 11, and it is fitted with a Leyland Ill-litre oil engine, developing 150 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. The gross vehicle weight is 22 tons, and the payload of 13 tons can be discharged in 15 sec. at a 70 deg. angle of tip.

Another large dumper is the Douglas model, which will be shown by Thos. W. Ward, Ltd., Sheffield (Stand 93). It is a 6 x 4 vehicle of 22 tons capacity and is powered by a Cummins oil engine developing 250 b.h.p. Engine speed is transmitted through a torque converter, giving a fully loaded maximum speed of 25 m.p.h. Other features include power-assisted steering, a dual-drive fully articulated rear bogie, a tipping angle of 70 deg.. and a loading height of 9 ft.
