Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

—By Pallet

FORK lift trucks are used widely for the handling of bottled beer in crates when standard types of wooden pallets are used. In the transport of casks of beer, however, difficulties arise because of the different capacities of casks and variations in dimensions after repairs.

Following investigations carried out by Handling Consultants, of Stroud, Gins, Whitbread are now using pallets specially designed for the handling of casks. Result: increased use of vehicle capacity and quicker turn-round.

Two types of pallets are in use, one to cater for both the nine-gallon cask (firkin) and the 10-gallon metal keg, the other for the 18-gallon cask (kil). Short legs are fitted to both sides of the pallet frame. Those at the top support the casks while those underneath rest on the vehicle platform or on a lower row of casks. Rubber tips at the ends of the legs protect both containers and platform floor. This method of location eliminates any movement and it has been found practicable to transport pallets four high and to stack them eight high in stores. It is another feature of the idea that better utilization is made of storage space. through use of the new pallets.

Manufacture and marketing of these pallets, for which a patent has been applied for, is in the hands of Service Engineering Co. (Northampton), Ltd.
