Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

in Good Features in the Products of a Bodybuilder Who Believes the Soundness of Uniform Design

THEpolicy upon which the bodybuilding business of Messrs. D. and E. Petty, of Hitchin, liens, is based was the other day outlined to us, when . a representative of the firm said : "We are aiming at the production of a standard body of pleasing design and embodying all possible features to meet the requirements of coach and bus

operators. By the standardization of the various main components of Petty bodies, and, indeed, the bodies themselves, we are able to offer high-class products at competitive figures."

There are certain attractive features that are to be found in all bodies of this make. For instance, lighting cables are carried behind nicely shaped mouldings, but, although they are hidden from sight, they are easily accessible from above without removing the covering strip.

Another characteristic of Petty bodies is the ample headroom provided, whilst the firm make their own seats, in which the sides and pedestals are built in one piece, thus reducing to a minimum the number of fixing bolts required. • A further point of value is that door locks are fitted with safety catches. Window curtains are carried, top and bottom, on short rods bedding , into cylinders 'containing" springs, • so that each cuilain may quickly be replaced.

Messrs. D. and E. Petty, pride themselves on the excellent interior lighting of their vehicles. By paying a little extra for lamps made to their special design, they arc able to ensure ample

illumination. • Although Petty bodies are marketed at reasonable prices the quality of the material and the workmanship are first class. Windscreens are all made from safely glass, whether specified or not. Q.,T. adjustable windows are standard features.

B42 During the period of the Scottish Show there will be on view in Glasgow a Petty-bodied A.J.S. Commodore 26seater coach for Mr. John Sword, who controls the Scottish midland department of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd. There will also be a Gifford 32-seater bus available in that city.

During our visit to the firm's works we were able to inspect and ride in a Commer Invader 20-seater coach, the exterior finish of which, below the waist, was in cream. 'The upper part of the bonnet was black and was met by a wide waist band of similar hue, picked out in gold. Black was also used for • the rear dome and roof, but was relieved by cream window pillars.

The armchair seats were upholstered in grey moquette, with blue' leather trimming, and were arranged in an orthodox fashion ; each wheel-arch seat was longitudinally situated and accommodated two persons.

In this and other Petty bodies sliding front doors are used ; they are specially designed to occupy a minimum amount of the body width. At the rear was a

coach-type door. The luggage compartment on the roof was covered in.

On the principle that a passenger who takes a -penny ticket is entitled to as much comfort as is the long-distance traveller, Messrs. D. and E. Petty are producing a standard bus body rivalling in comfort that of the coach. Indeed, at first sight, we gained the impression that the vehicle—in this case embodying an A.J.S. forward-control chassis—was for long-distance work. It has a sliding door at the front and a folding one at

the rear. .

Coach-type seats, upholstered in moquette, are, used, and an unusual feature, so far as the service bus is concerned, is the provision of ash-trays.

Another attractive vehicle is a Commer Avenger 26-seater coach, which has been planned on luxurious and generous lines. All the armchairs face forward and the body incorporates all the normal Petty features.

Frotn, the .foregoing it will be seen that Messrs. D. and E. Petty are practical bodybuilders who thoroughly understand the requirements of coach and bus operators and do everything possible to meet them in an efficient, bat inexpensive, manner. •
