The Union Transit Co., of Glasgow, Has a Large Fleet of Modern Goods Vehicles and its Haulage Operations Extend into Many Spheres .

A T the present moment we are _ti able to give only a brief outline of the operations of the Union Transit Co., but hope to return to them later. The company is one of the largest of its kind in Scotland, and at its head offices, 381, Argyll Street, Glasgow, a large staff of clerks is kept busy in keeping its wheels moving—figuratively, if not

literally. Outside, the number of drivers and other employees is considerable, and the amount of rolling stock is eitensive. .

An interesting point about the undertaking is that its founder—Mr. William Dalziel—is still living and takes an active share in its manage ment. He is its sole owner and has lived to see his business grow up from a small beginning until its ramifications have now far exceeded the boundaries of the British Isles.

Glasgow is Scotland's chief centre for transport trade, not only in Virtue of its size; but also of its juxtaposition . to the best • steamer and railway facilities.' Railways exist everywhere, of course, but Glasgow taps more districts and reaches farther, without going off the .main lines, than do all other towns and cities north of the Border put together. Since the openine: lip of the country by good roads capable of bearing heavy traffic, it has gone in largely for mechanical transport, and among the first concerns to start out on this line was that which forms the subject of these remarks.

The Union Transit Co. had already been for long in the field as carting contractor, home and foreign furniture remover and general carrier, but the ingress of the motor lorry with its almost endless possibilities and wonderful mobility, enabled it to extend its home connections on an enormous scale and to undertake various kinds of work which it had previously been unable to tackle.

Mr. Dalziel was quick to realize the great value•of the new resources which were placed within his reach and he took advantageof them with Promptitude and discretion. He provided himself with fleets of motor lorries 'and wagons, and soon the name of the " Transit" was as familiar in the remote rural districts as in the great centres of population.

From cottage and castle he conducted removals with the maximum of efficiency and the minimum of trouble or worry to his clients. Nothing was too small for his close and particular attention and nothing too big or onerous. His motor vehicles were always of the latest and most improved types, being specially designed for the various branches of his diversified enter

prises. He defied competitors to surpass him in anything, and skill and natural talent combined to give his company the highest reputation. Whatever needed removing was always safe in his keeping, and thoroughness and punctuality, with courtesy and tact, have ever been his watchwords in business.

The Union Transit Co. is not the only company that is engaged on removal work in Glasgow, but it is, perhaps, the best known. It is, probably, in more request than any other for the removal of furniture and personal effects to and from the Continent and other places abroad. With its motor wagons it collects the goods to be shifted, at any given point, no matter how isolated it may be as regard railway or shipping communication, and; in the briefest time, deposits them at the other side of the globe, if necessary.

It may be stated that it pays special attention to the packing and shipping of motorcars, and for this class of business it occupies a prominent position in the trade. Its garages are numerous and private automobiles are housed therein on moderate terms. Whilst the company has suffered more, or less from the prevailing trade depression, its prospects are excellent, and within two or three months it will be able to make interesting and important announcements with regard to rapidly increasing business and the means it is adopting for coping therewith on distinctly progressive and efficient lines.
