• It is now virtually neck-andneck in the race to be Britain's leading truck supplier, with Iveco Ford (having registered 5,713 HGVs so far this year) marginally ahead of Leyland Daf which is coming ever closer with 5,467 HGV registrations to date this year.
According to this month's figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Leyland Daf has more than halved the lead Iveco Ford enjoyed at this point in 1988. By April of last year the gap between the two leaders was just under 570 registrations — it is now less than 250.
Mercedes-Benz is firmly established in third place with 3,801 registrations this year; Volvo is fourth with 2,926; Renault fifth with 1,554; ERF sixth with 1,511, and Scania seventh with 1,473.
