Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LNG replacing dies sel. Both fuels are measured by their 3 0

calorific quantity ill at combustion •

and the equivalent 4;

of a litre of diesel is 0.71kg of LNG.

If the truck had run solely on diesel it would have returned 35.3111/100km or 8,00mpg. Using current costs of diesel and LNG the total saving per 100km is 11% or £3.42.

The current LNG price reflects the vagaries of the market. Eighteen months ago, Chive Fuels' price was 64p a kilo of LNG, which would double fuel savings to 20% or £6.20 per 100km.

With new gas-holding installations built on Britain's coastline at sites such as South Hook's depot at Milford Haven the market expects to see an abundance of natural gas, countering the recent struggle for supply.

Chive Fuels supplies LNG to hauliers and Roy James, managing direc tor, says there will be a gas bubble as supply exceeds demand. "In the last four years the UK gas-powered truck market has been starved of vehicles following the demlse of its champions, namely ERF and Foden.

"Clean Air Power's recent ability to dual-fuel Euro-5 Volvos is new and brings with it the opportunity to reverse the trend in falling fuel sales and shrinking fuel station numbers.

'Chive has always been optimistic and that is why it chose to mothball some of its stations rather than close them. If there is significant uptake then there's room for significant reductions in LNG prices and hopefully we could get back to half the price of diesel once again and growing numbers of both depot-based and retail outlet refuelling stations.

"It won't take a lot (say 30 to 40 more trucks to fuel) and there would be significant price reductions. lt's up to the market, if diesel prices are truly a problem then there is a solution."
