A RESOLUTION passed by the 1-1 Howden (Yorks) Division of the Conservative Association expresses alarm at the growing inability of large bus companies to provide rural services. The Government are urged to take steps to allow one-man operators and owners of small buses to carry passengers for reward without reference to the Traffic Commissioners.
Mr. L. C. Sands (Pocklington) said the time was opportune for a return to the one-man conveyance which flourished in rural areas in the 1920s. The present infrequency of services had contributed to the drift from the land.
East Yorkshire Motor Services are shortly to withdraw all buses on their Pocklington to York, via Stamford Bridge, and Pocklington to Howden, via Bubwith, routes. Mr. C. R. H. Wreathall, general manager, said while the fuel tax existed at its present figure, nothing could be done to improve rural services. Peak traffic demanded double-decker buses, but at other times the vehicles ran half empty.
