down from IRHA role

By David Harris AN IRISH television programme has prompted the President of the Irish Road Haulage Association to temporarily step down from his post while he pursues a libel complaint against RTE, the Irish state broadcaster.

Jimmy Quinn, who is in his second term as IRHA President, was appearing on the programme Prime Time when the interviewer raised the issue of a previous labour relations case taken against a company owned by Quinn.

The programme made a series of separate accusations against three named hauliers, accusations which are now the subject of a -line-by-line" investigation by the IRHA. Liam Brewer, the IRHA vicepresident, says: "The IRHA will not condone any law breaking on the part of its members, and will not support action that endangers public safety. The IRHA explains that it has repeatedly complained that the authorities fail to police illegal operators properly, and adds that no Irish haulier found to have repeatedly broken the law has ever lost its licence.

Brewer adds: -Our function is to secure an environment where hauliers can work in a professional and responsible manner in full compliance with both Irish and European rules.

-Safety is a major consideration, and it is particularly unhelpful when the haulage industry is put under pressure to operate at what are uneconomic rates and to unrealistic deadlines"
