At Cfir. Brain's request the Lord Mayor also made a presentation to Mr. Jack Patience in recognition of his work for the competition notably in the early days. Mr. Patience was then unanimously elected an honorary member of the national organizing committee.

During a review of the new draft regulations it was agreed that in the kerb test the provision relating to the distance of the vehicle wheels from the kerb, which allowed for a penalty "in certain tests" of 50 marks over the worst correct performance if the distance exceeded 24 in., should he deleted. Also that the total penalty should be based as before on a loss of one mark per in., despite the claim by a number of committee members that a driver should he disqualified for parking at this distance from the kerb. ln the case of classes Fl, F2 and 0, a semi-trailer length up to 38 ft. was approved in place of the existing maximum of 30 ft.

After a discussion on protests, the majority of members voted that the stipulation "in writing should be deleted from the new regulations. Although the view was expressed that allowing Service drivers to compete in classes appropriate to the vehicle type might be prejudicial to other drivers because Service driving instructors often took part in the competition. discontinuance of class' S was approved.

Dates that have been decided for 196.5 eliminating contests include Edinburgh, June 6; London, June 13; Leeds, June 20: Southend, June 27; and Fleetwood, July 4. No contest will be held at Cheltenham next year, whilst the venue for the final will again be Bramcote.

London-Basingstoke Motorway : The proposed route for the new A3 motorway. nearly 40 miles Jong, between London and Basingstoke, has been announced by the Ministry of Transport. Estimated cost of the motorway is more than £25m. and it is expected to be completed in the early 1970s. The route will run from near Sunbury Cross, Middlesex, across the Thames on a new bridge north of Chertsey, then through Surrey and Hampshire to near the junction of the A30 (West Country) and A33 tSouthampton) trunk roads, some six miles south of Basingstoke.
