TO discover where, why and how goods are carried within the United Kingdom is the aim of the newly formed Road and Rail Association. The association. which counts among its foundermembers Lord Amweli, a former Under Secretary for Air, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Aircraft Production, was formed, I understand, following the publication of figures concerning the loss of time as a result of traffic congestion, writes a special correspondent.
The association, which last week described itself as "a group of individuals," believes that the present distribution of goods carriage is economically wasteful. It seeks to encourage more effective use' of existing facilities.
I was told by Mr. Patrick Thursfield, joint secretary, that the association could not hope to conduct a survey of its own. It intended to co-ordinate present published figures but would welcome an independent survey.
Two of the five founder-members of the association—Sir Kenneth Grubb and Mr. Claude Siminonds—are directors of C.S. Services, Ltd., a public relations con-cern, who issue information on behalf of the association.
Mr. Bernard Braine, Conservative M.P. for South-East Essex, and Mr. David Hardman, who was Labour M.P. for Darlington from 1945-51, are other founder-members.
