pays £720 for falsifying a chart

A FIFE driver's tachograph record indicated that he had driven from Bristol to Preston, a distance of more than 300km, in two hours; a journey time his counsel suggested was more usual for Doctor Who.

Martin Dickson of Cowdenbeath was ordered to pay fines and costs of £720 for falsifying a tachograph record and taking insufficient daily rest; he admitted the offences when he appeared before the Leyland, Lancashire magistrates.

Prosecuting for VOSA, John Heaton said a 44tonne artic belonging to Omagh, Northern Irelandbased Trevor Cathers and driven by Dickson was stopped in a check at Cuerden, Preston at 3.45pm on 17 April. The current tachograph chart showed his start time as 1.45pni in Bristol. The distance travelled according to the chart was only 64km but the actual distance between Bristol and Preston was over 300km and Heaton pointed out that Dickson could not have covered that distance in only two hours. He was also in possession of a despatch note from Sainsbury's at Emerson Green,Bristol showing a time of 11.07am — at which time Dickson's tachograph records showed him at rest.

Heaton reminded the court that the drivers' hours and tachograph regulations were there in the interests of road safety.

Appearing for Dickson, Philip Scully said there were three ways in which somebody could get from Bristol to Cuerden as quickly as Dickson's tachograph chart showed. One was an extremely quick wagon; the second was Doctor Who's Tardis; and the third was falsification_ This, he added, was a case of a driver attempting to do as much work as possible to obtain as much money as possible. He had been fined £5.000 by a Scottish Court last year and was still paying that off at £120 a week He hada wife and two children and was earning £30191 net per week.
