IT IS time somebody took the smug smiles off the faces of the staff of retail stores, wholesalers and others who refuse to accept pre-booked loads from carriers. This kind of thing used to happen at the docks and caused hauliers to introduce a surcharge for wasted time and effort.
Now the Road Haulage Association is considering recommending express carriers who are "stood up" by consignees to retaliate with demurrage. This is easier to say than to do, but those whose policy is "I'm alright Jack" should be shown decisively that they are not.
