NATIONAL Freight Corporation chairman Sir Dan Pettitt handed Freightliners back to British Rail this week with a regretful statement of the company's achievements, while British Rail gleefully accepted the return.

But Freightliners' managing director Cyril Bleasdale was optimistic about the future of the company under its new masters.

"There will be no 'under new management' sign. It will be 'business as usual' for all our customers," said Mr Bleasdale.

"Of course this places on us the responsibility to perform well in terms of customer satisfaction and creating the profit we need for reinvestment."

Sir Dan commented that under NFC management, the company had increased its annual revenue from £10.5m in 1969 to a forecast £55m this year and turned a £2m loss to a £1.4m profit last year.
