INTEGRATION between all forms of passenger transport— that is the main aim of West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (METRO), according to its first annual report published this week.
The report says Metro is still intent on gaining control of the National Bus Companyoperated services. After NBC refused to sell any of its West Yorkshire subsidiaries Metro took the fight to the Secretary of State for the Environment— but did not gain a favourable response.
"We consider it illogical to have separate publicly owned undertakings in a designated Passenger Transport Area with their loyalties divided between local and national responsibility. The policy of outright acquisitions was followed because only by this means could we fully achieve our aims and objectives," says the report.
At a press conference this week director-general Tom Lord outlined the PTE policy that fares charges by the constituent companies should be standardised. He said the Metro corporate identity should be established as quickly as possible.
