• The first Passenger Transport Authority chairman to be appointed under the terms of the Transport Act 1968 is Aid. Frank Griffin, 64-year old Conservative leader of Birmingham City Council. He was appointed chairman of the West Midlands PTA at its first meeting on April 2, and will receive a salary of E1,500 a year. Aid. George Hawkins was appointed vice-chairman--he is leader of West Bromwich Council.
It had been the intention of the Authority to appoint Mr. W. G. Copestake, general manager of Birmingham City Transport, as the new Executive's director general. Mr. Copestake, however, suffered a severe heart attack recently, and may not be able to apply for the post. The Authority agreed to advertise nationally for a director general who will be offered a salary of about £9,500 a year.
