• The joint union committee of the Northern General Transport Co. Ltd., and associated concerns, has announced that strike action will be taken immediately if drivers and conductors are assaulted while carrying out their duties. Mr. M. Mountford, the joint committee secretary, said they expected the travelling public to help men who were attacked and there should be tougher penalties for offenders.
A number of men attached to the Northern depot at Washington, Co. Durham, are taking karate lessons to protect themselves against attackers.
