• Some commercial vehicle manufacturers were still under the delusion that operators were only concerned with lowest initial cost, irrespective of all other considerations, Mr. G. F. Page, president of the FTA, said in Nottingham yesterday.

It was true that some vehicle users thought in this way, but the majority rejected this penny-wise pound-foolish philosophy and would like to see a number of improvements, leading to lower operating and maintenance costs, even if this led to an increased initial outlay.

Vehicles represented a substantial part of a company's transport bill and the Association was now holding regular meetings with vehicle manufacturers to thrash out problems of design, service facilities and the availability of spares.

A working party on drivers' hours and productivity schemes had been set up and the Association was now in a position to give guidance to members in this field. This service would be developed so as to give members the benefit of the best experience that was available from other companies.

The sphere of education and training would increasingly require the attention of the Association in the months and years ahead, said Mr. Page. Basically, it did not see its role as a provider of eduational facilities, although courses were being provided when the Association detected a need that was not being met.
