• Granting a licence to Weir's Tours to run excursions and tours from Clydebank would adversely affect services offered by other operators, Scottish Traffic Commissioners were told on Monday.

The company is applying for permission to operate from Clydebank to• places throughout Britain, including Blackpool, Scarborough, and Llandudno.

The application is being contested by the Central SMT Co, Scottish Omnibuses, W. Alexander and Sons (Midland), Western SMT, Wallace Arnold Tours, and Ribble Motor Services.

Mr J. M. Begg, traffic manager of W. Alexander andd Sons (Midland), said his group covered most of the ground in the proposed routes. Duplication would be serious for the continued existence of some services, some of whin were wider-used.

Mr Geoffrey Steel, British tours manager of Wallace Arnold Tours, said Weir's Tours proposed "to provide tours to destinations where my company is involved". Weir's would also be aiming at a similar market—the elderly and those in limited income groups who preferred off-season trips.

In support of Weir's application, members of old-age pensioners' groups in Clydebank said they engaged Weir's to provide buses for private party excursions which, they claimed, were more satisfactory than alternative services. It was both costly and inconvenient to travel either to Glasgow or Scotstoun for trips provided by other services.

The hearing will be resumed later.
