• Hauliers already struggling with rocketing insurance should brace themselves for another steep rise, says insurance broker Heath Lambert Group, Transportation director Mike Hawkes warns that a government plan to allow the NHS to recoup the cost of accidents through employers' liability insurance could see premiums shooting upwards: "This is the last thing that the employers liability market needs right now. The government is looking to raise .£200m for the NHS through this scheme so we are looking at premium rises of 20% just to cover this cost."
Hawkes adds that operators may be able to reduce their premiums by absorbing more of the risk themselves through higher excesses. He adds that corporate killing legislation could finally be on the way, with a bill possible next spring.
However, David Bergman of pressure group the Centre for Corporate Accountability says: "As far as we know this is a bill that is not at the forefront of the government's mind, which is of great concern to us."
