• A northern truck dealer is selling most of the stock of new Steyr artics left in Britain at knock-down prices.

Premier Commercials of Osset, West Yorks is offering J-reg 231kW (310hp) tractive units, complete with Eaton or ZF boxes, sliding fifth wheels and high-roof cabs, for £25,000. The company has been appointed agent for Yorkshire Bank Finance, which took over the stock of 30 unregistered trucks from Leeds-based Clark Commercials.

Clark took on all the unsold Steyrs after the demise of importer Steyr Trucks UK in January 1990, but followed it into receivership in the summer.

Premier, which is also selling 17-tonners and 15 used Steyrs, says the new trucks carry a full MAN warranty. MAN bought the ailing Austrian-based Steyr in late 1989, shutting the UK importer and its network of distributors: "It's as good as the parts back up on MANs," says Premier's John Hemmingham.

The trucks were built in 1989 and, apart from minor blemishes, are said to be in good condition. Four of the trucks have already been sold to Orcol Fuels of Morley.

Premier specialises in selling repossessed vehicles for finance houses, but plans to expand by buying in vehicles itself.

The company is run by Hemmingham, former sales manager at Clark Commercials, and Bill Clements, who was Clark's accountant. The pair stress there is no relationship with their former employer.

Clark Commercials wanted the UK franchise for Steyr when the Austrian manufacturer shut its UK subsidiary.
