In witness whereof the driver and Mr R. Turner on behalf of the company have hereunto set their hand the day and year first before written. COSTING an international journey provides a number of choices both in method of costing and routes available. In both cases it provides either a margin for rates negotiation or a more reasonable rate to the customer.

In this article, the costing has been based on the use of Sealink ferries and the crosschannel route from Newhaven to Dieppe.

This route was chosen for two reasons. The first was that the Newhaven-Dieppe crossing is less popular than other Sealink routes—notably those from Dover and Folkestone—but it has some advantage in that Dieppe is nearer to the West coast of France and to Spain than are Calais or Boulogne. Therefore, though the ferry charge is 40p a metre greater than other routes, there is a saving in mileage on both sides of the Channel for Newhaven is but 50 miles from London.

The second reason was that considerable expansion is now planned for Newhaven. The East Sussex County Council has agreed that the land adjacent to the Harbour at Tidemills can be developed to improve the port's freight handling and commercial vehicle facilities. Moreover, the road improvements to be undertaken between London and Newhaven during the next decade is likely to increase the number of freight vehicles using the port. All of which will tend to increase •the service of 1,000 commercial vehicle places available in each direction every four-weekly period which now applies.
